After ten years of leadership, Tim Ervolina is making plans to step down as President and CEO of United Way Association of South Carolina (UWASC) in 2016. Ervolina joined UWASC in 2006, where he’s lead the growth and development of the organization that provides support to the 25 local United Way organizations in South Carolina. During his tenure, UWASC has thrived as a leader in addressing issues impacting families in South Carolina and facilitating collaborative solutions on these issues. Millions of dollars in funding have been leveraged for local United Ways and their partners, with investments in education, income, health care access and basic needs.
The United Way Association of South Carolina, serving as the State’s Commission on National and Community Service (SC Commission), has announced the opportunity of federal funds to support organizations wishing to host an SC AmeriCorps program for the 2016-17 grant year.
All new and re-competing applicants are required to attend an AmeriCorps Applicant Technical Assistance Workshop in February 2016 in order to be considered for funding. Dominion and the Dominion Foundation will award up to $1 million in environmental stewardship grants this spring. The grant requests, up to $50,000, should focus on specific, short-term projects that promise measurable results to improve the environment. The projects should support one or more of the following priorities:
Protecting and preserving natural habitats
Monitoring and enhancing water quality
Preventing pollution and improving open spaces
Making nature accessible
Educating the public about environmental stewardship

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) announces that the 2016–17 Request for Proposals for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) grant program is now available online. Approximately $6 million in funding will be distributed on a competitive basis and thedeadline to apply is April 1, 2016.
For this funding round, the SCDE will fund single public school districts, individual public schools, private schools, public charter schools, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and other public or private entities. Applicants must propose to establish or expand activities in community learning centers that provide opportunities for academic enrichment and tutorial services; offer students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities; and offer families of students served opportunities for literacy and related educational development.
The SCDE will offer an onsite technical assistance workshop for interested grant applicants.

The Walmart Foundation opened the application period for its State Giving Program funding cycle, welcoming applications from South Carolina nonprofits with programs that focus on hunger relief, healthy eating, or career opportunities. The deadline to submit grant requests is Friday, January 29, 2016.
In 2015, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $1.4 billion in cash and in-kind contributions around the world, which included more than $31.9 million given locally in South Carolina.
"The Walmart Foundation's State Giving Program is another way we extend our mission to help people live better," said Brooke Mueller, Director of Public Affairs for Walmart. "In addition to the thousands of community service hours our associates perform and the in-kind donations that are spread throughout the communities we serve, these State Giving grants allow us to help nonprofit organizations fulfill their mission and continue on their path of service."
For example, as a 2015 State Giving Program grant recipient, Senior Resources in Columbia was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation's State Giving program to fund the purchase of a catering van used to deliver meals to seniors.
"The meals we serve to homebound seniors and disabled adults provide one-third of their daily nutritional requirements," said Senior Resources Executive Director Pam Dukes. "By providing this van, Walmart supported us in our efforts to ensure that every meal was delivered safely and in a timely manner."
Launched in 2008, associate-led State Advisory Councils work with the Walmart Foundation to help identify needs within their state, review grant requests, and make funding recommendations to the Foundation. Eligible applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program's minimum funding criteria.
